Now that the longest government shutdown in our nation’s history is over, industrial investors can look forward to receiving a slew of economic data in the coming weeks, such as jobs reports, updates to the consumer price index, home purchases, manufacturing output, and international trade statistics. However, if investors have been taking notice of the private data over the last month and a half, we should brace ourselves. For example, one week after announcing some positive news about employment growth in October, following two consecutive months of contraction, ADP reported that an average of 11,250 jobs were lost during each of the four weeks through October 25th. Based on the monthly survey conducted by the Institute for Supply Management, the manufacturing industry contracted again in October, marking eight straight months and 34 out of the last 36 months. Nonetheless, there may be some positive news for industrial investors to look forward to. While the U.S. Census Bureau will likely report big drops in imports, exports may bring positive news based on private reports of outbound shipping volumes. This would support TAG’s narrative that the industrial market is transitioning from being import-dependent to export-dependent, highlighting new untapped opportunities. As the saying goes, time will tell.
