TAG Industrial Watch: March 8, 2025
When it comes to economic news, this past week has been busier than rush hour traffic. Starting with President Trump’s ongoing trade war, Mexico, Canada, and China predictably levied retaliatory tariffs on American imports. In January, America’s trade deficit in goods posted a record high of -153.3 billion (excluding services). Given that the trade war involves America’s top three trading partners, accounting for 42% of U.S. imports in goods, this economic conflict could have a noticeable impact on the economy (U.S. Census Bureau).
With regards to the jobs market, its perceived strength is coming into question after announced jobs cuts in February surged to the highest level since the pandemic lockdowns, with the help of the President’s efforts to reduce the federal workforce (Challenger). Meanwhile, only 77,000 jobs were added to private payrolls in February according to ADP, well below the expected 140,000 (Fox Business). To top the week off, pending home sales dropped to the lowest level on record in January, surpassing every month during the worst housing crisis in our nation’s history from 2008 to 2010 (Big News Network).
As a result of recent events, Atlanta’s Federal Reserve Bank lowered its GDPNow forecast to -2.8% for Q1, before slightly pulling back (Investing.com). While all of this news comes as a concern, none of this should come as a surprise for readers of the Industrial Watch. Over the last two years, TAG has helped its clients understand and prepare for a potential economic perfect storm, allowing them to remain calm through current events.
