TAG Industrial Watch: July 29, 2023

As expected, the Federal Reserve raised the bank-to-bank lending rate to the highest level in over 22 years to a range of 5.25% to 5.5%. While the financial community debates whether this is the Fed’s last rate hike, the big picture has been overlooked. Given that America’s total debt levels have nearly quadrupled since the turn of the century to $60 trillion, the Fed has far exceeded raising rates past the level that this economy can withstand. Since the Regional Banking crisis, a sense of calm has taken over Wallstreet, despite the emergence of numerous warning signs of an incoming severe recession (as discussed in our newest issue of the Industrial Watch magazine).

But with the passing of each month, more and more debt refinances into significantly higher rates, straining the budgets of governments, businesses, and individuals. In all likelihood, the economy is quickly approaching a breaking point just as price inflation is set to reverse course. For opportunistic industrial investors, this means there are great buying opportunities waiting just around the corner.
