“While much of COVID-19 economic assistance has been provided for numerous markets, there may be opportunity for CRE owners to receive relief as well. The Helping Open Properties Endeavor Act of 2020 (HOPE Act of 2020) was introduced into Congress and would “require the Department of the Treasury to establish and administer a facility to guarantee certain preferred equity investments in commercial real estate borrowers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.” (National Law Review) Those with commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS) loans would see relief from lenders as delinquencies have been on the rise. Supporters of the bill say it would finally address the pending crisis in CRE and help avoid foreclosures that would inevitably hit the U.S. economy. Commercial real estate borrowers’ stability could undoubtedly help small and large businesses alike to keep their doors open and survive the public health crisis.” -Adam Abushagur
